Day 4 – Alleppey to Thekkady: Wildlife, Spices, and Nature Adventure
After spending a peaceful night on the beautiful backwaters of Alleppey, wake up to the soothing sounds of nature and enjoy a delicious Kerala breakfast onboard your houseboat. The early morning views of the calm waterways, coconut trees, and local fishermen beginning their day create a magical atmosphere that you'll never forget.
After breakfast, check out from the houseboat and begin your journey to Thekkady, one of Kerala's most famous wildlife destinations. The drive covers approximately 140 kilometers and takes around 4 to 5 hours. Along the route, you'll travel through scenic villages, spice plantations, lush forests, and winding mountain roads that offer breathtaking views at every turn.
As you enter Thekkady, you'll immediately notice the fresh mountain air and dense greenery surrounding the region. Located in the Western Ghats, Thekkady is famous for its rich biodiversity, beautiful forests, and aromatic spice plantations. It is one of the best destinations in Kerala for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
After arriving, check into your hotel and relax for a while before heading out to explore the region's biggest attraction—Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
The sanctuary is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, deer, wild boars, bison, monkeys, and many species of birds. If you're lucky, you may even spot tigers or leopards deep inside the forest. The sanctuary offers one of the most exciting wildlife experiences in South India.
One of the best ways to explore the sanctuary is by taking a boat safari on Periyar Lake. As your boat slowly moves across the peaceful lake, you'll witness stunning views of the surrounding forests reflected in the crystal-clear water. Wild elephants often come to the lakeside to drink water, while deer graze peacefully along the shoreline. Birdwatchers will also enjoy spotting colorful kingfishers, hornbills, cormorants, and many other native birds.
After the boat safari, visit one of Thekkady's famous spice plantations. Kerala is known worldwide as the "Land of Spices," and this is the perfect opportunity to learn about the cultivation of cardamom, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, and coffee. During the guided plantation tour, you'll discover how these spices are grown, harvested, and processed before reaching markets around the world.
The aroma of fresh spices fills the air, making the visit both educational and enjoyable. You can also purchase authentic Kerala spices directly from the plantations to take home as souvenirs.Adventure lovers can choose from several exciting activities, including bamboo rafting, jeep safaris, jungle trekking, nature walks, and elephant camp visits. These experiences allow visitors to explore the untouched beauty of Kerala's forests while learning about its unique ecosystem.
As evening approaches, explore Thekkady's local markets. The shops here sell organic spices, herbal products, handmade chocolates, Ayurvedic oils, wooden handicrafts, tea, coffee, and traditional Kerala souvenirs.
For dinner, enjoy authentic Kerala cuisine featuring freshly prepared local dishes. Popular choices include Kerala Fish Curry, Chicken Roast, Malabar Parotta, Vegetable Stew, Appam, and delicious Payasam for dessert.
After an exciting day filled with wildlife, adventure, and nature, return to your hotel for a peaceful overnight stay. Tomorrow marks the final day of your unforgettable Kerala journey as you travel back to Cochin.
